Understanding Social Value, Environmental Sustainability and ESG

There has been a lot of confusion regarding Social Value, Environmental Sustainability and ESG which relates to the timeline of events. Social Value, Carbon Reduction and Net Zero part is UK Government Policy but is also an essential part of Global ESG Strategy Development and Reporting.
Since the introduction of the SDGs there has been more focus on Environmental awareness which was highlighted even further during COP26 and the Global Impact of Climate Change. However, organisations are still trying to understand how they can report against their ‘Social Responsibility’.
Every Organisation is now looking for a solution regarding the ‘S’ in ESG.

Social Value, Environmental Sustainability, and ESG

Pre-2012

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Prior to 2012 all organisations were reporting against their CSR. This was no longer appropriate as it didn’t the represent ‘value for money’.

2012

Public Services (Social Value) Act

The legislation meant that commissioners had to ‘consider; Socia Value in procurement process. However Social Value is not ‘Mandatory.

2012-19

Reviews of the Public Services (Social Value) Act

There were continuous reviews of the legislation as it became widely adopted at a local level rather than at a central Government level.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Environmental Impact & Climate Change is a Global concern. Organisations start reporting against the environmental SDGs.

Social Value becomes mandatory in Central Government Procurement and Climate change concerns take centre stage.
